  • Steam train at platform

Steam Railways & Museums in Norfolk & Suffolk

    15 February, 2017

Norfolk and Suffolk are home to some of the most magnificent vintage steam railways in the country. They offer a nostalgic experience, away from the electronic world that we live in today – and is one that many people have not had the opportunity to enjoy.

We’ve put together a list of the heritage and steam railways and museums to visit while you’re on holiday in Suffolk or the Norfolk area.

    North Norfolk – Near Sheringham

Poppy Line – North Norfolk Railway: Easily accessible from Cromer, the North Norfolk railway at Sheringham, offers much more than just a train ride, it offers an insight into the world of yesterday. The route will bring you along some of the finest coastal countryside you could wish to see, and you’ll be riding along one of their professionally restored coaches. All stations on the line have been restored and have a range of attractions for you to enjoy, with lunch and evening meals available so you can make the most of your day. Take a look at our cottages in Cromer and find the perfect place to stay.

    Website: http://www.nnrailway.co.uk

Address: Station Approach, Sheringham NR26 8RA, England

    North Norfolk – Aylsham

Bure Valley Railway: Halfway between Cromer and Norwich, the Bure Valley railway runs between Aylsham and Wroxham, in the heart of the Norfolk Broads. One of Norfolk’s longest gauge railways, there are a number of quaint villages along the line, where you can stop and explore and board again simply by waving down the driver as the steam train approaches.  The station itself features a café offering cakes, treats, snacks and homemade hot meals.

    Website: http://www.bvrw.co.uk

Location: Bure Valley Railway, Aylsham Station, Norwich Road, Aylsham, Norfolk, NR11 6BW

    North Norfolk – Wells Next-the-Sea

The Wells & Walsingham Light Steam Railway:  Running between Wells and Walsingham, all stations along the line have been restored and the two locomotives that run on this railway are well known within the steam industry. Overall, the location is one of Britain’s best little railways, and is a must visit if you’re in the area.

    Website: http://www.wellswalsinghamrailway.co.uk

Location: Wells to Walsingham Light Railway, Wells Next-the-Sea, Norfolk. NR23 1QB.

    Mid Norfolk - Dereham

Mid-Norfolk Railway: Running between Dereham and Wymondham Abbey, this line offers dining experiences on selected days of the week – so you can enjoy a cream tea or fish and chip supper while trundling through the heart of the Norfolk countryside.

    Website: http://www.mnr.org.uk

Location: Station Road, Dereham, Norfolk, NR19 1DF

South Norfolk/North Suffolk border – near Diss

    Bressingham Steam & Gardens

Less of a steam railway, more of a heritage museum – the 4km track winds its way through the 20 acres of landscaped gardens, passing locomotive sheds, the galloper carousel and the Dad’s Army Collection. There is something for all of the family and is a great day out.

  • Bluebell Woods in Suffolk & Norfolk

Bluebell Woods in Suffolk & Norfolk

    21 March, 2017

Norfolk and Suffolk is home to some beautiful undisturbed woodlands and during the spring months, these come to life in a dazzling sea of blue as the bluebells begin to flower. Here in Suffolk, you’re never very far from a bluebell wood and we’ve put together some of our favourite bluebell wood walks. If you're looking for somewhere to stay, we have a wide selection of holiday cottages in Suffolk or Norfolk to choose from.

    Reydon Wood, Woodbridge

Just a 30 minute drive from Aldeburgh, Reydon Woods is an ancient woodland, with a rich history and untouched nature. Bluebells are in great supply and a recent programme to ensure the survival of the wooded area means that wildlife in the area is rich and varied. Take a look at our cottages in Aldeburgh.

Address: Sutton Hoo (National Trust), IP12 3DJ

    Captains Wood, Woodbridge

An ancient woodland, where fallow deer herds roam, with a 3km circular walking trail. Please note, dogs are not allowed at this location (due to the deer herds).

    Address: IP12 2BE

    Haughley Woods and Parkland

Part of the Haughley Park estate, between Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds, this 250 acre woodland remains one of the most natural, bluebell-rich locations in Suffolk. The estate hosts lots of events and their support for local businesses and the environment makes the location a fantastic day out.

Address: Haughley Park, Stowmarket, IP14 3JY

    Ashwellthorpe Lower Woods

Located 12 miles south west of Norwich, this woodland is known for magnificent fields of blue, wild garlic, wood anemone, spurge, herbs and orchids. It is one of the UK’s richest destinations for fungi and butterflies.

    Address: Lower Wood, Ashwellthorpe

    Foxley Wood, North Norfolk

Less than an hour from Cromer, Norfolk’s largest ancient woodland, bluebells, butterflies and other wildlife are in abundance. In spring, the Woods can get very busy and it may be wet underfoot, so wellies are advised. Unfortunately, dogs are not permitted here. View our holiday cottages in Cromer here.

    Address: NR20 4QR

Bradfield Woods, Near Bury St Edmunds

Steeped in history and rich in natural wildlife, Bradfield Woods are a great choice for a family visit, with lots of children’s and family activities on offer. There are over five miles of existing trails, picnic areas and dogs are welcome (provided they are on a lead and well behaved). Bluebells appear in droves in spring, and the display is simply magnificent.

Address: Felsham Road, Bradfield St George, IP30 0AQ

    Priestley Woods, Near Stowmarket

Priestley Woods are among the most admired in the UK for its plant life, being home to hornbeam and the rare and infamous wild pear. There are many different types of plants, including orchids, bluebells and, as it’s not a very busy area, there is plenty of peace and quiet.

Address: Priestley woods, Barking, Needham Market

    Buckenham Woods, Near Wymondham

Situated South West of Norwich, Buckenham Woods is perhaps one of the least known of the bluebell woods on this list. Bluebells grow in their hundreds, and make for some fantastic shots, so you’ll be sure to love this destination!
    Address: Buckenham, NR16 2AS
