Wrentham Holiday Guide
Wrentham is a small and thriving village on the A12 and a great place to book a self-catering cottage holiday. The sandy beaches at Kessingland and Southwold are a short drive away, and the picturesque waterways of the Norfolk Broads at Beccles and Oulton Broad are within easy reach.
There is excellent walking around the village, through pretty lanes, past thatched cottages and over the well-marked footpaths and bridleways of the Benacre Estate down to the sea at Benacre and Covehithe. Worth a look is the beautiful medieval church and ruins here. There is a wonderful circular walk from Southwold to Covehithe too.
And there is everything you could possibly need right on the doorstep in Wrentham itself: a Community Playing Field with a range of children’s play equipment, a tennis club, bowling green, two good pubs serving Adnams Beer, an excellent café, as well as a village shop and Post Office, antique shops to browse, a Chinese takeaway and a fish and chip shop!
Attractions and things to do
Covehithe and Southwold
Covehithe is a tiny village set on the crumbling cliff top two miles from Wrentham. The ruins of its’ 15th century church still provide a striking landmark. There’s a fantastic beach walk here, windswept and fairly remote but, for those with stamina, you can walk to Southwold Pier (tides permitting – please check), enjoy a cup of coffee, then head back to Covehithe!Covehithe Suffolk NR34 Website
Local pubs and restaurants
The Horse & Groom, Wrentham
Another good, local pub, just off the A12, the Horse & Groom serves food every day and booking is recommended for Sunday lunch. This is very much a village pub, with pool table and darts board, traditional home-cooked food, and a large beer garden to enjoy in the summer months.1 London Road Wrentham Suffolk NR34 7HJ Tel: 01502 675279 Website
