According to a local historian, all the cottages in Church Street were vacated days after the Battle of Sole Bay to accommodate prisoners that were taken in the battle or floated ashore on wreckage etc. Apparently the locals at the time referred to the prisoners as 'smugglers' and hence the name of the now disappeared Smugglers Inn opposite Smugglers Cottage (that would have been handy!!), although all the cottages in the street were called Smugglers Cottages for many years after because of this use.

We went to Sutherland House for dinner Sunday night - excellent food - really top class! They've really upped their game! All six of us placed it as best of where we had eaten. Swan House in Beccles, The Crown and The Anchor in Walberswick other notable venues visited! Owner Sept 11
Thank you very much for giving us a lovely visit to Southwold for the fourth year running - three years in Smugglers Cottage. As always you were all from start to finish helpful, efficient, courteous and friendly. Sept 2011
