Description

Self Catering National Quality Assurance Standard RatingThe Old Stables comprise a courtyard of single storey cottages, two cottages sleeping two people and two cottages sleeping four people (one with disabled access) and offer visitors a delightful and very comfortable rural hideaway from which to explore the Suffolk countryside and coastline. The cottages are as follows:

Hartopp, named after a Lord of the Manor of Wissett, sleeps 2 people in 2 zip and link beds which can make up a 5' queen sized bed, with en suite bathroom with shower over the bath.

Bloomsbury, named after members of the Bloomsbury set who lived at Wissett Lodge in 1916, also sleeps two with en suite bathroom as above. This cottage accepts one small well behaved dog.

Each cottage has a patio garden area with garden furniture and a shared barbeque is available. The Old Dairy houses a shared laundry room with washing machine, tumble dryer and freezer.

Each cottage has a wealth of exposed beams and tiled floors and retain the warmth and character of the original building. Central heating is provided and also a wood burner style electric heater. Each cottage has its own paved sitting area with table and chairs and a barbeque in the courtyard is available to all the cottages. The owners have farmed at Wissett Lodge since 1954 and the 300 acre farm grows wheat, barley and oilseed rape and cattle graze the meadows in summer. Visitors can enjoy the Nature Trail (map provided) and other farm walks. A walk down the hill into the village of Wissett will take you to the church with round tower, the pub and a small farm vegetable shop. Just outside the village you can walk to Valley Farm Vineyards to taste the excellent English wine and tour the vineyard and see the alpacas living there. The nearest shops are in Halesworth 2 miles away, a pretty market town with swimming pool, library, restaurants, pubs and take aways, plus a superb variety of shops offering local produce. The seaside town of Southwold is 10 miles away and further afield is the RSPB centre at Minsmere and the coastal villages and towns of Dunwich, Aldeburgh and Snape.

Visitors are also invited to visit the Wissett Lodge Museum, which is a collection of farming and domestic memorabilia collected by the owners of the farm, and a collection of horse shoes which dates from medieval times to the end of the farm horse era. Many of the fascinating exhibits will rekindle happy memories of bygone days.
