This Grade II Listed Georgian Cottage is the second of four Grade II listed cottages built onto the unique and well-preserved C13th Northgate to an C11th Castle. The ruined castle itself, on high ground overlooking the valley of the river Nar, is an English Heritage site, as is the ruined Norman Cluniac Priory, the equal to many of Britain's most celebrated religious heritage sites. This historic village with its flint faced cottages, greens and river must be one of the prettiest in Norfolk. A variety of quality restaurants, a pub and shops are all very close to hand. The rolling countryside surrounding the Nar valley completes the scene.
Dating back to around 1800, this compact and characterful cottage is very well equipped with all modern conveniences including telephone, dish washer, automatic washer/dryer and microwave. Old brick fireplaces are ingeniously integrated with the tasteful decorative scheme. Modern electric storage heating and excellent use of space offer easy living and provide a very comfortable and nicely furnished country hideaway. The garden, which has been recently renovated, features a Gothic summerhouse and patio of old Norfolk pamments and shingle, is a suntrap and not overlooked. There is ample off-road parking. A variety of quality pubs (with customer internet Wi-Fi facility),restaurants and shops are all very close to hand.
Castle Acre is on the ancient Peddars Way - an ideal rambling centre. Sandringham and the coast at Hunstanton and Heacham are some 30 minutes drive, as is Wells-Next-the-Sea, Holkham Hall, Houghton Hall, Blakeney, Holt, Sheringham and Burnham Market. The historic City of Norwich is less than an hour by car. The current home for the BBC's 'Springwatch' is Pensthorpe Nature Reserve and Gardens which is only 20 minutes drive away. Everything about our holiday was excellent, accommodation, location - even the weather. Always slightly wary when booking s/c accommodation but haven't stopped praising it since we came home. Mrs M Nicholson May 2010
